The hits just keep on coming for Vikings fans as a season all but certain to result in a top 10 draft pick just got even worse as Adrian Peterson will likely miss at least one game with a high ankle sprain suffered in the first quarter of the team’s 8th loss of the season. The positive news is that its the most mild of sprains (grade 1) giving him a decent chance to return in week 13.
AP is averaging 100 yards from scrimmage and has 12 TDs – needless to say the drop off to Toby Gerhart will be significant.
FANTASY FOOTBALL SPIN:
Although Peterson vowed that he’d be fine for week 12 after the week 11 loss to Oakland - Monday’s MRI tells a different story as initial reports have All Day missing 1-4 weeks. Its worth noting that despite his violent running style – AP has missed only three games in his 5 year career.
Second year RB Toby Gerhart figures to get the start until Peterson returns but the Stanford alum has failed to impress in his brief career. At 6’0, 231 he runs more like a fullback but is averaging a serviceable 4.0 YPC on only 24 carries this season. In his week 15 start against Chicago last season, Gerhart had 16 carries for 77 yards and added 3 carries for 18 yards. Minnesota’s offensive line has been less than impressive this season and Gerhart lacks the playmaking ability to get more than what is blocked leaving him as more of a flex play when the matchup is favorable - not the case in week 12 against Atlanta’s stout run defense. The loss of AP is also a slight boost to Percy Harvin’s fantasy value as the Vikings had already been incorporating the dual threat more into the backfield in recent weeks (11 carries for 55 yards over past three games).
