Steve Smith has been using crutches at times over the passed couple of days to try to heal from an infection.  At first it was rumored to be a staph infection but now we have learned that it is not staph – that’s a good thing.  The Panthers are saying that Smith will be ready for the start of the season.

This is worth keeping an eye on but the fact that it not an infection of the staph variety is a very good thing.  Smith shouldn’t be moved down your draft board right now since by all indications this will not prevent him from taking the field week 1.  As we mentioned, you do have to watch the situation, however, and we will keep you informed.  Nearly all expert rankings have Smith just outside of WR1 range.  He’s a high end WR2 who depending on what you do in the first few rounds often ends up as the top receiver on fantasy squads.  Smith has the upside to be a top 10 producer.
