Rashard Mendenhall may finally be ready to return. He’s the big name with the largest paycheck and most proven history so it stands to reason he’ll get a chance to reclaim the starting gig in light of the other rushers struggling. Against the Chiefs on Monday night Jonathan Dwyer (19/56) and Isaac Redman (8/21) couldn’t get anything going. The ground game will be critical with Byron Leftwich under center. Mendenhall is officially listed as ‘Questionable’ and we will know more when we learn about who did and didn’t practice today.
Rotoworld says Mendenahall should be owned in all formats. They say he will at least get a shot at being the hot hand in Pittsburgh.
Looking down the road DynatsyLeagueFootball.com has Mendenhall as the #23 RB on their dynasty rankings.
FANTASY FOOTBALL SPIN
For the rest of the year we think this is likely to be a hot hand situation. There is a chance that Mendenahall impresses and locks down the feature role in a couple of weeks as he gets his legs under him. If any back is going to own the backfield it will be Mendenhall. Dywer and Redman had a chance and failed.
In Week 11, the Steelers their arch-enemy the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens aging and injured defense isn’t what it once was and they are giving up 20.2 fantasy points per game to opposing RBs. They are the 26th ranked team against the run giving up more than 130 yards per game and 9 rushing TDs this year. The Steelers may try to have a balanced attack because the Ravens are just as bad against the pass (26th in NFL) but they may not succeed with Big Ben in street clothes.
We’ll keep you posted on Mendenhall’s status and what the Steelers may do at RB. Whoever gets the bulk of the work has a good chance at a decent week against the Ravens poor run D. If Mendenhall doesn’t go, we lean toward Dwyer but we looked at three of the top rankers and they all had a different opinions on the Steelers’ backfield. At this point it’s impossible to predict who will earn the most carries. The committee backfield has us considering all alternatives before plugging in whichever Steeler is named the starter (worth noting that Redman started Monday and was virtually worthless for fantasy purposes).
